A Royal Favor
An estate that was once granted as a Royal Favor by King James I to the treasurer of Wars in Ireland, Sir Thomas Ridgeway in 1610.
Sir Thomas then went on to build a castle in nearby Augher, but soon sold the entire estate to James Erskine in 1622. Soon after the sale a mistake was discovered in the original grant made by the King.
The then King, Charles II made an updated grant of the lands to Erskine. This Royal Favor was acknowledged by then naming the estate 'Favor Royal'
This tudor gothic mansion is on record of being built in 1825. The house appears to have been lived in up until the mid 1970s until the forestry service bought the house and most of the lands.
There have been rumours of hotels and spa resorts over the years but none of these have come to light. The mansion has suffered some serious fires now leaving the house nothing short of a ruin.
